17 WEEK PREGNANCY UPDATE

I feel like I have been pregnant forever when in reality I'm only 16 weeks into the journey. I'm not even halfway through my pregnancy yet. Happy to say I've hit the second trimester now - apparently this will be when I'm feeling my best!

HOW FAR ALONG?

I'm currently 17 weeks and 1 day pregnant.

HOW IS BABY DEVELOPING?

Baby is now 13cm (5.1in) long and weighs the same as a turnip. Apparently he/she is now the size of an apple. The skeleton is beginning to harden and is turning from cartilage to bone. Body fat is now accumulating around the baby's skeleton which is crucial for heat generation and energy. The baby's hearing is improving. If I were to play music he/she may even start moving around in my womb.

HOW AM I FEELING?

I'm feeling pretty good. The morning sickness has finally stopped. I'm really not missing the constant feeling of nausea. I've been ill the last two weeks with a bad chest and cold however aside from that this is probably the best I have felt. I'm not as tired as I once was and am managing to stay up later than 8pm. I'm going to bed as late as 10:30pm so a big improvement for me. I'm really excited for my 20 week scan which will be in the new year.

HAD ANY APPOINTMENTS?

I've had my 16 week midwife appointment. In fact due to my dates being out I was only 14 weeks pregnant at this appointment. The midwife offered to try and listen to the baby's heartbeat but did warn me that as I was in fact only 14 weeks pregnant they may not find it. I was so happy when they found a strong heartbeat quickly.

I've also had my first consultant appointment. I'm high risk in this pregnancy for a variety of reasons. In my last pregnancy I had a c-section, high blood pressure and a post-partum haemorrhage. My consultant was lovely and went through all my blood results. I will need to take Aspirin through this pregnancy as I'm at risk of pre-eclampsia. Tough on a person who struggles to swallow any tablets!

I have an appointment at the VBAC clinic next week to discuss the possibility of a natural delivery. My midwife and consultant think its definitely possible so I will let you know how that goes.

If you are pregnant I would love to hear how you are getting along. Leave me a comment below!
